Hodge Close Quarry is just one of many slate workings in the Tilberthwaite Valley, between Langdale and Coniston.

Deep in the bowels of Hodge Close Quarry in the Lake District are remnant patches of beech and oak woodland, which have managed to survive among the former quarry workings. Ordinarily you wouldn’t give these trees a second glance as you walk by, but a layer of thick ghostly mist transforms the scene into one of sheer beauty. This particular photograph won second place in the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) photographic competition.
